Chest Pain
Chest pain is one of the most frequent calls to 911 and is a true emergency. It can be difficult to rule out a heart attack and for that reason, it is advisable for those experiencing chest discomfort of an unknown or suspected cardiac origin to call for emergency assistance. Heart Attacks symptoms vary from person to person and can range from slight to very severe. Some victims complain of sharp stabbing like pain, while others have a complaint of pressure and no "pain" at all. While chest pain is commonlty associated with heart attacks, sometimes chest pain is in fact not a heart attack. In some cases the reason for chest pain, can be unrelated to the heart itself, but still fell very much like "the big one".
There are often other associated symptoms like sweating, nausea, and vomiting that can also be clues to the likely hood of a heart attack. Early recognition of a heart is essential to successfully dealing with this common, and very lethal emergency. The early recognition of a possible heart attack and early activation of EMS is the best chance of survival for the victim. Victims who are untreated for heart attack will go into cardiac arrest which is never good. The majority of cardiac arrest victims will not recover. With the advancement of the AED and application of effective CPR chances may improve, but the best outcomes generally are those who are treated prior to collapse and sudden cardiac arrest.
