Call 911or Provide Care First?
Unresponsiveness is one of the most common calls made to 911 dispatchers. It can be caused for many reasons and is in itself an emergency. Bystanders who are witness to a person who becomes unresponsive need to call for emergency medical services immediately. For an adult victim It is not necessary to do a complete assessment to determine exact conditions prior to calling 911. Because of the innumerable possibilities with the unresponsive victim, early activation of EMS is critical.
For infants and children who are found unresponsive by a responder who is alone, it is necessary to assess and apply the appropriate treatment needed for two minutes before calling for EMS. Because the infant and child cannot survive very long without oxygen, when there is only one responder available, it is necessary to apply care immediately in order to maximize the possibility of successful interventions
